Ubuntu in a Malayalam language movie

A keen eyed spotter pointed this out to me. Malayalam is the language of Kerala state of India. The distinctive sight of an Ubuntu unity desktop can clearly be seen on one of the monitors.

Spotted Ubuntu on laptop on a "Sound Waves: The Symphony of Physics" - a documentary presented by Dr Helen Czerski, with a program on it that showing the ultra sonic frequencies of bats. It appears around 10 minutes and 14 seconds into the program.

Spotted Ubuntu on a computer at CERN on a BBC2 documentary about Dark Matter called "Dancing in the Dark - The End of Physics?" which can currently be viewed on BBC iPlayer right now and this screenshot was taken at 24 mins in.

Ubuntu Spotted on Dara O'Brien's Science Club

I was watching Dara O'Briain's Science Club the other night, a great TV program on BBC Four I might add, and spotted the familiar glow of that Ubuntu  'afterbirth' wallpaper (most likely an LTS release) on the monitors in the background.

Bang Goes The Theory (Series 6 Episode 3)

Spotted a Linux desktop on some security expert's Samsung Netbook, on this fear-mongering and patronizing episode of Bang Goes The Theory. Geek points if you can identify the desktop.

Update: It seems to be Backtrack, a well known penetration testing distro with KDE.

Horizon: Can We Make a Star on Earth?

Not exactly Linux but I spotted this, possibly a Sun Solaris workstation, that is used to control the Z-Machine, the worlds largest X-ray generator, at Sandia national Laboratories. Skip to about 36 minutes in to see them. It looks like it's running CDE or early Gnome. If anyone knows what machine this is please post in the comments.

Update: Thanks to Lopta on Twitter and a bit of investigating, I've identified it as a HP 9000 Workstation running HP-UX.

Ubuntu Spotted On Home Of The Future

In Home Of The Future on Channel 4, I spotted Ubuntu on one of the University of Oxford's automated vehicles, judging by the Gnome2 desktop, it looks like either 10.0.4 or 10.10, I'd lay money on it being 10.0.4 , it being the LTS. I think it was being ssh-ed into from the Macbook. For those who can access 4OD can watch the program here, and skip to 40 minutes in. Update: here's a YouTube link.

James May's Man Lab - Series 2 Episode 3

James May sends two deceased pets into the very outer reaches of the atmosphere. Two teams track the two cremated pets in their balloon-hoisted capsules using GPRS. James May's team car has an ASUS netbook running Linux on the dash, with a Gnome desktop, you can just make out 'Applications, Places and System on a very fat top panel.

KDE on "Heroes"

Thanks to Huey Van Ladore on Twitter for the heads-up on this site that features a sighting of a KDE desktop including Kopete on the TV series Heroes. Search for Life: The Drake Equation

Spotted an old KDE desktop on a workstation on the "Search for Life: The Drake Equation" (presented by scientific dullard Dallas Cambell) on a multi-monitor workstation searching for extra-terrestrial radio waves (SETI). I'd guess it's most likely Red Hat. Notice the boot-up screen in the last screenshot, KDE panel in the 4th screenshot and the KDE logout/shutdown screen in the 6th screenshot.
